He quickly grabbed the pen and note pad that he always keeps on his night stand and jotted down , “ give to the Gulf , ” then went back to sleep . This random act was the impetus for the “ Give to the Gulf” relief effort , a collaboration of area businessmen and musicians to raise money for those residents of the Gulf area that have been devastated by the oil spill .
Give to the Gulf contributors perform at the Kick Off Press Conference on July 7, 2010. The blast caused an oil line to rupture that has since spewed thousands of gallons of crude into the Gulf waters that has had a serious impact on the environment , wildlife , the fishing industry , and tourism .
Knight , an inventor , scientist and founder of Remarkable Technologies , Inc ., attempted to contact BP with an invention he had that he believed could repair the leak .
“ A lot of others had the same idea I had , so I decided to help these people in another way , ” he said . “ Everybody loves music , so why not gather musicians , much like Farm Aid , to make an album that people can access online . A person can buy a song , or several songs , and the proceeds would go directly to those in need in the Gulf . ”
Knight contacted his friends Tom Russo and Paul Lombardo of the East Hartford-based L&R Productions to get the musical part of his idea up and running . Meanwhile , he also contacted Maryland resident Mike Sokol of JMS Productions , and the “ Give to the Gulf ” team was born .
Sokol created the online model for the website and , with his contacts at ITunes , the website became a reality .
“ I approached Eric and told him that Paul and I could write songs and help raise the bar of awareness of what’s happening down there , ” said Russo . “ His invention got placed on the back burner , and the musical idea began to grow . The rest is history . ”
Five of the 11 tunes in the first volume on the website belong to Lombardo and Russo , just to ensure there would be enough music for people to possibly purchase , and get the site up and running , according to Russo . The team chose the United Way as the charity to receive the donations . The worldwide organization had already established a fund for the victims of hurricane Katrina that slammed into the Louisiana coastline in 2005 .
“ We are the facilitators , ” commented Knight . “ We never touch the money , a person buys a tune , and it goes directly to the United Way . Also , the United Way has created a model , based on ‘ Give to the Gulf , ’ that can be used in the event of future disasters . This way , musicians can band together , and get help to an area within a day . So , we created something much larger . ”
The team is already working on a second volume . They put out a call to action to musicians , and the response has been overwhelming .
“ This is made up entirely of volunteers , ” said Russo . “ We certainly hope a national act will take notice , and help us out . Myself , Paul , and a guy named Bill Holloman , wrote the theme song . ”
“ All the artists who submit a song , still own all the rights to that song , ” explained Lombardo . “ But on this site , with every purchase someone makes , their royalties go to United Way to help in the relief effort . ”

Performer Jackson Weatherby Sings at the Kick Off

Everyone involved in “ Give to the Gulf” is quick to say that it was a team effort . With Lombardo and Russo on the musical side , and Knight and Sokol on the technical end , the project took off quickly .
“ This is not an anti BP message , ” remarked Nancy Aborn Wuennemann , media contact for the organization . “ It is a pro-American message . If what happened in the Gulf , happened in Long Island Sound , wouldn’t we want other Americans helping us ?”
For more info on how to donate to the Gulf , go to http : // www . givetothegulf . org . The idea and name is the brainchild of Eric Knight, a musician, inventor, and founder of Remarkable Technologies, Inc. Working together with Paul Lombardo and Tom Russo of L&R Productions Inc., and Mike Sokol of JMS Productions Inc. in Maryland, the team developed the online model for the Web site portal, collaborated with musicians from around the country, and established relationships with corporate partners including iTunes and TuneCore to make Give To The Gulf a reality.

“All over the country people are asking how they can help their fellow Americans in the Gulf. We thought it could be as simple as sharing music and downloading a song,” said Knight, from Farmington, Conn. “The project was an intense collaboration. We worked tirelessly to find the perfect lyrics, the perfect music, and the perfect sound to capture an anthem that will resonate and inspire people to action.”

Give To The Gulf, Volume 1 features eleven original songs by accomplished musicians including the title track, Give To The Gulf.

When visitors download music from Give To The Gulf through iTunes, 100 percent of the monies that musicians would normally receive goes directly to the United Way Gulf Recovery Fund. The Fund provides emergency assistance, such as help with food, rent and utilities, and supports long-term recovery efforts to rebuild lives through educational, financial and health-related programs.

The concept of Give To The Gulf is simple – by giving money, people get great music. Musicians from around the world who submit their music to be part of the fundraising effort retain all ownership and copyrights to their music. Once submitted, the Web site acts as a conduit to Apple’s iTunes system under the Give To The Gulf music label umbrella.

“I simply could not be more proud of what we’re accomplishing for Gulf-coast residents,” said Knight. “What started as a simple phrase – ‘Give To The Gulf’ – that popped into my head about six weeks ago has blossomed into a wonderful collaboration of people with very generous hearts. Fueled by technology, it is refreshing to see how the power of people and ideas can accomplish great things for our fellow citizens.”

Tom Russo commented, “In three short weeks, our team has moved mountains to bring this effort to life. Writing the lyrics for the title track has been an inspiring labor of love motivated by the desire to help those truly in need. And just as the clean-up will take an on-going effort, we have created a model through the Give To The Gulf Web portal that will keep giving. We encourage songwriters and artists from around the world to contact us as Volumes 2 and 3 are already in the works.”

Paul Lombardo added, “The music in Volume 1 is quite diverse, and as we continue to reach out to musicians and songwriters globally, the diversity will grow richer. This is all about people helping people. The quality of the songs and productions that artists have generously donated to the cause is outstanding. Now, all Americans can engage in this effort with us by enjoying great music while supporting a very worthwhile cause.”

Mike Sokol followed by saying, “Music is one of the most powerful forces on the planet. Since pre-history, it’s been used to calm or uplift or call us to action. But there was little opportunity for individual musicians to reach beyond their own circle of listeners – until now. // ]]>

By ANN DeMATTEO
Special to The Register Citizen

Concern for the oil spill disaster along the Gulf Coast, connections and technology have merged to create an innovative online fundraising campaign, and it all began when Hamden native Eric Knight had an idea.

Give to the Gulf, a website that encourages giving through music, will be launched today at L & R Productions in East Hartford, a recording studio. Artists will begin performing at 3 p.m. at the company, 87 Church St.

Knight, who now lives in Farmington, said that four words, give to the Gulf, woke him out of a sound sleep at 4 a.m. six weeks ago.

“I wrote down the words on the pad I keep next to my bed,” Knight said Tuesday.

He thought the words had a good sound for a fundraiser. But how to pull it off?

When you’re the founder of Remarkable Technologies Inc., a products and marketing company, and you’re also a musician and inventor, you just have to make a few calls.

So that’s what Knight did.

One call and meeting led to another and in three weeks, www.givetothegulf.org was created.

Knight said he’s “still pinching” himself at the thought that so much has come together in such a short time for “such a great cause. It has the potential of raising millions. We’ve set in place a mechanism for continued giving. It’s just amazing that it’s come together in six weeks.”

Working with Paul Lombardo and Tom Russo of L & R Productions, and Mike Sokol of JMS Productions in Maryland, the online model for the website portal was developed, Knight said. They collaborated with musicians nationwide, and established relationships with corporate partners including iTunes and TuneCore.com, he said.

“All over the country, people are asking how they can help their fellow Americans in the Gulf. We thought it could be as simple as sharing music and downloading a song,” he said.

Give to the Gulf, Volume 1, features 11 original songs, including the title track, “Give to the Gulf.” Volumes 2 and 3 are already in the works.

When visitors download music from Give to the Gulf through iTunes, 100 percent of the proceeds that musicians would normally receive goes directly to the United Way Gulf Recovery Fund. The fund provides emergency assistance, such as help with food, rent and utilities, and supports long-term recovery work to rebuild lives through educational, financial and health-related programs.

Other musicians who submit their music to be part of the fundraiser in the future, will retain all ownership and copyrights to their music.

Once the music is submitted, the website is a conduit to Apple’s iTunes system under the Give to the Gulf music label umbrella.

“Give to the Gulf” is Knight’s second contribution to help with the oil spill catastrophe. In May, he designed a method to stop the oil flow, which gained attention early in the disaster. We hope that that’s exactly the case,” said Rizzo.

“But more importantly we hope that it motivates the individuals to purchase it, off of itunes, knowing that the dollars are going to go directly to help the people in the Gulf that need the help.

Give to the Gulf.org has eleven songs available for purchase. The proceeds go to the United Way Gulf Recovery Fund, said Knight.
First Published: Jul 7, 2010 3:50 PM EDT
